We teach ‘not’ to try and catch a falling resident but this comes up time and time again and people asking if can ‘slide them’ down your body. The ACC guidelines are so old now but they state not to. Has anyone seen newer guidelines – from UK/USA/Australia or similar that might now teach a technique? Or are we fine to keep saying “no”! We do discuss resident/patient handling points and that you can stabilise a person well from here in a safe way, which might prevent a fall. Thanks for your ideas.

Helen Murray will lead us through a deep dive on slings. Reminding us of the different options, how different spreader bars affect sling use. We are also going to be discussing how we prescribe slings – do we allocated ‘colours’ or teach principles? Does it depend on where we are transferring to and from – or is that too complicated with high staff turnover?

We are teaching this as part of our M&H introduction and skills development sessions. The emphasis is supporting staff to make an informed decision about the safety (or not) of getting the person up to walk to the bathroom. Partly related to falls prevention as well as promoting staff safety when transferring patients. Also helps them to clarify what they might be asking the physio to assess/review.
